How the EPF corpus builds up
Every month, a portion of your basic salary (typically 12%) is contributed to your EPF, and your employer contributes as well. Part of the employer share goes towards EPS (pension) up to the statutory wage ceiling, while the rest joins your EPF balance.
EPFO credits interest annually on running balances. Over a long career, compounding does most of the heavy lifting — which is why understanding and tracking your EPF early matters.
- Employee contribution: usually 12% of basic + DA.
- Employer EPF contribution: part of the employer’s 12% share.
- Interest is declared by EPFO each year and can change.
